BS in Mining Engineering Curriculum

Begin your journey as a Mining Engineering professional in your first semester with this specialized, hands-on program.

You’ll begin your journey as a mining engineer in the first semester. In Art of Engineering, you’ll launch immediately into applying engineering principles to solve practical problems in a hands-on, team-based environment. In your first two years, you’ll establish foundational knowledge in mining engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science. At the same time, you’ll broaden your perspective by undertaking courses in the humanities and social sciences through Columbia’s Core Curriculum

In your junior and senior years, you’ll build depth. Technical engineering courses will equip you with skills in fundamental areas like fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and computer modeling. You’ll also examine key mining engineering topics such as mining methods, planning and design, ground control, rock mechanics and mining sustainability. Related topics will also be introduced through complex engineering problems and design tasks such as rock fragmentation, mineral processing and mi

Your studies will culminate in a year-long senior design project. Taking a highly applied approach, this project will enable you to apply your knowledge through hands-on research. Working with your classmates, you will also enhance your soft skills in communication, negotiation and leadership, preparing you to successfully transition into the professional world.
