Klaus Lackner Elected as New EEE Chair

06/01/2006

Professor Klaus Lackner has been unanimously elected as the next chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering, beginning July 1, 2006. Professor Lackner joined EEE in 2001, after 18 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is the director of the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, part of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Professor Lackner is an outspoken advocate for environmental engineering and sustainability, and his recent media appearances include Newshour with Jim Lehrer, MSNBC, and the Wall Street Journal.

Professor Lackner succeeds Professor Upmanu Lall, whose three-year term included a rapid growth in EEE undergraduate enrollment, the formation of a new environmental health engineering research initiative in partnership with the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health’s Department of Environmental Health Sciences, the hiring of three new junior faculty members, and the initiation of a major departmental remodeling project.
