What WAS That Midtown Smell?

On the morning of January 8, a mysterious smell sent parts of midtown Manhattan into evacuation mode.  Mayor Bloomberg and the City's public safety agencies moved fast to rule out any health danger or even possible attack, but there was no clear explanation about just what the odor actually was or where it came from. Now four Columbia scientists and one from Barnard have a possible answer, which they published on the op-ed page of the Sunday, January 21, New York Times:
